Loch Lomond National Park Area Information
The largest fresh water lake in Britain, Loch Lomond is over 23 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. Its beauty has drawn visitors from all over the world. Famous writers such as Boswell and Johnson, Sir Walter Scott, William Wordsworth and John Keats visited its shores and Queen Victoria sailed on a steamer from Inversnaid in 1869.
Steamers used to provide the main form of transport, linking the loch-side with Balloch. Work is at present proceeding on the restoration of one of the most famous of these, the paddle steamer "Maid of the Loch" at Balloch and hopefully it will soon be back in service providing a major attraction for visitors to our area. The Loch is the centrepiece of Loch Lomond Park and Visitor Centres have been established close to the shore at Luss & Balmaha to enhance the visitors' enjoyment of this beautiful area. The audio visual presentations show the geology and wildlife, the plant life and the local history, and help the visitor to appreciate the present life of the Loch and the communities around it.
Set aside time to walk its shores, visit its islands by joining the mailboat from Balmaha, or take one of the many other cruises available from Balmaha and other points around the Loch. Climb the surrounding hills and collect your own memories of this magical place.
Walking
Walkers from all over the world take on the challenge of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow. They reach Drymen area on their first days walk. The route leads on to Balmaha and follows the eastern shore of Loch Lomond towards remote mountains and moors and the final destination of Fort William. Some opt to complete the Way backpacking and camping , whilst others prefer to book accommodation ahead in B & Bs and guesthouses along the route.
Sailing
Loch Lomond being so large, offers excellent sailing waters. It can also be very dangerous with strong currents and many underwater rock formations so great care must be taken by all who undertake to navigate its expanses. Please ensure you have an adequate chart and life jackets before venturing onto the water.
Shopping
There are numerous small shops and businesses in and around the villages that make up the East Loch Lomond area. Balloch and Alexandria are eight and nine miles from Drymen respectively and both towns have a number of Factory Outlet type of shops as well as supermarkets, jewellers, opticians, chemists, bakeries etc.. Stirling, our county town, is about 35 minutes drive and Glasgow, Scotland's commercial capital about 45 minutes.Unlike places in England, shops in Scotland tend to be open for trade seven days a week.
